You may find that you have a flap of skin that hangs down from the bottom of your belly. This is especially common after a large weight loss, whether patients have lost the weight through weight loss procedures (like a lap-band, gastric sleeve or bypass) or by diet and exercise alone. Many patients have a problem with rashes or itching under this flap of skin, called a pannus which means “apron.” It can also be hard to keep this area clean. We commonly perform an operation called a panniculectomy which removes the hanging flap of skin. In many cases, this operation can be covered by health insurance. For most patients without serious medical problems, this is performed as an outpatient surgery. We are also frequently able to combine this with a breast reduction or breast lift.
