DIEP Flap Reconstruction
DIEP Flap breast reconstruction is one the of most popular and advanced forms of breast reconstructive surgery available. DIEP Flap, which stands for Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforators, is a microsurgical technique performed by our highly skilled surgeons.
With this procedure, we use a flap of excess skin, fat and blood vessels from the lower abdomen to construct a new breast of soft, warm and living tissue from the patient’s body, all while leaving the abdominal muscles intact. This leaves the patient with improved abdominal contouring, akin to a ‘tummy tuck.’ DIEP Flap reconstruction may be performed immediately following a mastectomy or at a later date, whichever may work best for our patients.

Your Breast Reconstruction
Dr. Rowe is a highly skilled New York breast reconstruction surgeon who works closely with women to achieve pleasing breast surgery results. Breast reconstruction can be performed in several different ways including TRAM flag, DIEP flap, TUG flap, or GAP flap reconstructions. Breast implants, with or without expanders, may also be used. Nipple and areola reconstruction are carefully planned, as well, for the most natural, beautiful breasts. After a thorough consultation, Dr. Rowe will recommend the best procedures for your body.
Breast and Nipple Sensation After Mastectomy
For patients who undergo DIEP flap surgery, we can also connect the nerve in the flap to the nerve in the chest. In some patients, this will create a breast or even a nipple that has sensation.
Studies have shown that women who undergo breast reconstruction with their own tissue feel like their reconstructed breast is more a part of themselves than women who have implant reconstruction. Connecting the nerve supply makes that “feeling” even stronger!
Breast Reconstruction Recovery
Supportive bandages and a compression bra will be worn around the clock for several weeks after your breast procedure. Your recovery will be eased with the assistance of a friend, family member, or skilled nurse. If you would like nursing support, Dr. Rowe’s staff can recommend excellent care in a local hotel or in the comfort of your home. You should feel comfortable resuming your normal routine within 4-6 weeks of surgery and Dr. Rowe and his staff are always available to answer questions during recovery.
